The Thank You Game: A Heartfelt Family Tradition

Dear Readers,

As a parent who isn’t particularly keen on traditional games, I want to share with you one special activity that has become a cherished tradition in our family. We started playing it when my daughter Claire was around four years old, and it’s one of the few games I genuinely enjoy.

Introducing the Thank You Game

We call it the “Thank You Game,” and it’s both simple and heartfelt. The concept is straightforward: we sit together, and one person starts by thanking each other player for something specific they did. Once that person has expressed their gratitude to everyone, the next person takes their turn, and we continue this way until everyone has had a chance to appreciate one another.

For instance, if it’s my turn, I might say:

  • “Dad, thank you for packing away all of the camping supplies today. That was extremely helpful.”
  • “Claire, thank you for being so patient with me this week. I know I was on my phone more than I should have been, and I appreciate your understanding.”
  • “Peter, thank you for tackling your chores with such initiative today. It really makes a big difference when you pitch in!”

Once I’ve thanked everyone, it would be Claire’s turn. She might say:

  • “Mom, thank you for always making breakfast for us. You’re a good mommy”
  • “Dad, thank you for taking us camping. I had so much fun!”
  • “Peter, thank you for sharing your toys with me. It was really fun!”

Then Peter and Dad would follow suit, thanking each of us in turn. This ensures everyone gets recognized and appreciated.

The Evolution of Our Game Nights

Over time, the Thank You Game has evolved to include other variations we play routinely during dinner or while driving in the car. These moments together have become excellent mood changers, softening tensions and fostering connection. It’s a beautiful way to cultivate open communication and strengthen our family bonds.

Why We Keep Playing

This game reinforces how we should be speaking with one another—filled with kindness and gratitude. Each round brings us closer and allows us to recognize the contributions and efforts of one another, creating an atmosphere of love and appreciation.
