Week 49: The Daily Relaxation RitualWeek 50: The Daily Relaxation Ritual Challenge

daily relaxation

We hope everyone had a peaceful, restorative Thanksgiving and a chance to slow down a bit. 🍂 It’s hard to believe we are already at Week 49 of this year’s challenges.

Last week, we focused on helping others without being asked. This week, we’re gently turning the attention inward and making sure that each person in the family receives a small, intentional moment of rest.

🌙 This Week’s Challenge: One Relaxing Thing Each Day

The goal this week is simple: each day, every person chooses one distinctly relaxing thing just for themselves.

It doesn’t have to be big or fancy. It can be a tiny, realistic moment that says:

“My body and mind matter too.”

For the littlest members (and sometimes for the grown-ups), this may need to be gently facilitated. A small child isn’t going to run a bath, plug in the eye mask, and tuck themselves in—but we can help them experience rest.

🏡 What This Looks Like in Our Home

Here are some of the simple ways we’re practicing this week’s challenge in our house:

  • warm foot massages for the kids
  • watching a cozy family movie
  • using a 10-minute heated eye relaxation mask
  • breakfast in bed for someone who needs a slow start
  • taking a nap (even a short one)
  • carrying little ones from the shower and handing them warm pajamas
  • gentle family walks
  • baking something simple and comforting
  • reading aloud to the kids
  • enjoying soup or bone broth
  • finding a quiet corner to read a book for 5–10 minutes
  • spending two days slowly writing a Christmas list instead of rushing it

Some of these are facilitated for the kids, and some are chosen by them. Some are quiet moments we take for ourselves. The key is that each day, each person gets a small dose of intentional relaxation.

🙋 If You’re Doing This Challenge Individually

If you’re not doing this with a whole family, the challenge still fits beautifully. Choose one soothing moment just for yourself each day:

  • brew coffee or tea and actually sit down to drink it
  • step outside for fresh air and a few deep breaths
  • take a warm shower and change into comfortable clothes
  • stretch your neck, shoulders, or back gently
  • listen to a favorite song without multitasking
  • sit in quiet for three minutes before bed
  • read a few pages of a book you’ve been putting off

Small rests ripple into big benefits over time.

🧭 How to Practice

  1. Each day this week, choose one relaxing thing just for you.
  2. Help younger children choose and experience their relaxing moment too.
  3. Keep it simple so it’s sustainable.
  4. Notice how you feel before and after.
  5. Share ideas with each other to spark new ways to rest.

🌱 Why This Matters

Intentional rest:

  • lowers stress
  • supports emotional regulation
  • increases patience
  • teaches kids to recognize their own needs
  • prevents burnout for adults
  • helps the home feel softer and calmer

Rest isn’t indulgence; it’s maintenance. And in a season that can quickly become over-scheduled and over-stimulating, building in small daily pockets of calm is one of the kindest things we can do for ourselves and for each other.

If you know someone who tends to care for everyone else first and forgets to rest themselves, this may be a gentle challenge to share. You don’t have to do it together in person—a quick text saying, “I’m choosing one relaxing thing for myself each day this week. Want to join me?” can be enough.

With quiet encouragement,

Ashley
