Weekly Wellness Challenge: One-Foot Balance

one foot balance

Hi friends — this week we’re trying something short, simple, and surprisingly powerful: practice balancing on one foot each day. Time how long you can hold it on each side and notice whether one side feels steadier than the other. No pressure — just curiosity and a tiny daily habit.

Note: Our previous challenge was a gentle daily walk to invite a little sunshine and movement — if you missed it, you can find it in our 52-week archive.

👣 How to Do the Challenge

  1. Find a safe, flat spot (near a counter or wall if you want light support).
  2. Stand tall, shift your weight onto one foot, and lift the other foot a few inches off the ground.
  3. Start a timer and see how long you can hold still. That’s your baseline.
  4. Repeat on the other foot and record the time.
  5. Do this once each day this week — try to beat your best time or simply notice small improvements.
  6. If needed, lightly touch a stable surface for balance; progress at your own pace.

🌟 What to Notice

Jot down or say aloud: which side felt easier? Did you feel steadier after a few days? Did you notice any change in how you stood, walked, or reached for things? Small observations are the point here — curiosity over perfection.

✅ Benefits of Practicing One-Foot Balance

  • Improves balance and reduces fall risk. Balance training is linked to fewer injurious falls and better stability across ages.
  • Builds lower-body and core strength. Standing on one leg engages ankle, hip, and core muscles that support everyday movement.
  • Sharpens proprioception and coordination. These exercises improve your body’s “sense” of position in space, which helps with coordination and reduces injury risk.
  • May reflect broader health and aging markers. How long someone can hold a one-leg stand has been associated with markers of healthy aging and overall function.
  • Supports focus and mindful movement. Balancing is quiet, present work — it’s a small moment of attention that can calm a busy mind.
