Raising Communicators: Why We’re Prioritizing Language in Our Homeschool
Let’s Talk Language!
There’s a beautiful, sacred journey that unfolds when our children first learn to express themselves through gestures, sounds, and, eventually, language. From the outset of our homeschooling adventure, I embraced the notion that communication would be central to our learning experience, not just in terms of reading and writing but in truly understanding and connecting with others. As a result, language—both spoken and signed—has evolved into a vital component of our daily rhythm.
The Importance of Language Learning for Kids
Language learning is more than just an academic pursuit; it’s an essential life skill. When we prioritize language development in our homeschools, we’re setting the stage for better communication skills, a deeper understanding of cultural nuances, and stronger connections with others. Few moments bring me as much joy as hearing my children articulate thoughts—whether in Spanish or sign language. These interactions remind us that we are building a foundation of skills that will last a lifetime.
Language Learning from Birth
In our home, language transcends being just a subject—it’s a pathway to connecting with the world. Since Claire’s birth and now with Peter, we have been learning American Sign Language (ASL) together as a family. Our journey began with curated YouTube videos, which later expanded through in-person classes, and was enriched by basic signs shared with us by friends in the Deaf community. This gentle, consistent exposure has unlocked numerous communication doors for our kids, fostering empathy and expression from the very beginning.
Additionally, we have integrated Spanish into our homeschool routine through a blend of curated YouTube playlists, engaging live Outschool classes, and local group lessons. Claire participates in in-person Spanish classes with a small group of fellow homeschoolers, and Peter will join her soon. These consistent, real-world learning experiences have brought language to life in remarkable ways, helping our children acquire vocabulary and practice new skills confidently.

Why Early Language Learning Matters
Research indicates that children are naturally inclined to acquire language. Their developing brains are uniquely wired to embrace new sounds, patterns, and connections. Early exposure to a second language can enhance memory, sharpen focus, and boost problem-solving skills. The advantages of bilingual (or multilingual) learning extend well beyond cognitive benefits, including:
- Building Empathy and Cultural Awareness: Learning a new language exposes children to different cultures, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of diversity.
- Strengthening Listening Skills: Bilingual children often develop superior listening skills as they navigate different sounds and language structures.
- Fostering Resilience and Focus: The challenges of learning a new language can improve a child’s ability to tackle obstacles and maintain concentration.
- Enhancing Native Language Understanding: Learning a second language often deepens a child’s understanding of their native language.
- Expanding Academic and Professional Opportunities: In our globally connected world, proficiency in multiple languages can open doors to future opportunities.
And here’s the good news: it’s never too late to start learning! Whether for yourself or a loved one, embarking on the journey of learning a new language can greatly benefit brain health. Studies have shown that engaging in language acquisition at any age helps improve cognitive function, enhances memory, and can contribute to overall well-being.
How We Make Language Learning Work in Our Homeschool
We’ve learned that effective language learning thrives in a rhythmic structure rather than a rushed environment. Here’s how we integrate language learning into our daily routine:
- Tailored Spanish YouTube Playlists: We select playlists designed for clarity, engagement, and repetition to captivate our little learners.
- Interactive Outschool Classes: The live instruction offers an interactive element, allowing our kids to engage in real-time with experienced teachers and native speakers.
- Local Spanish Group Classes: Claire meets weekly with a small group of homeschoolers, providing an immersive experience that reinforces her language skills.
- Incorporating Sign Language Lessons: Our everyday interactions include online videos, in-person classes, and the support of friends in the Deaf community to solidify our kids’ understanding from infancy.
To keep vocabulary engaging and fresh, we use language-based games such as “The Signing Game,” a quick and easy sign language game we play a couple of times a week and will likely share with you someday!
