Why I Keep Gatorade in Our Emergency Kit

Hydration isn’t just about water—it’s about being ready.

In our home, we prepare for anything—fevers, tummy bugs, blood sugar dips, long days outside, or unexpected fatigue. That’s why I keep Gatorade on hand—not as a daily drink, but as something that belongs in our hydration and wellness kit. It’s there if and when we need it.

Let me explain.

A Practical Hydration Backup

I wouldn’t say I’m against Gatorade for kids—in fact, I buy it regularly. However, I do have some qualms about certain ingredients, like artificial colors. Just like we use medicine sparingly (and don’t always love what’s in it), Gatorade serves a purpose during medical needs, even though it’s not my first choice for everyday hydration.

It’s amazing how, more than any other electrolyte drink, Gatorade is tolerated during times of nausea. It’s also incredibly soothing for sore throats, which makes it a surprisingly effective option when anyone in our family is feeling under the weather.

Gatorade

Whether it’s a fever, a stomach virus, low blood sugar, or even mild dehydration, I want something fast and effective. Gatorade does the job. That’s why I treat it more like a functional hydration tool in my parenting toolkit—not a pantry staple.

And yes, someone will inevitably say, “Gatorade isn’t healthy.” To which I say:
How healthy is your prescription medicine?
We all keep things on hand for when we need them—not because we want to drink them daily.

I’m a Terrible Water Drinker—Here’s What Helps

Confession: I’m a terrible water drinker. Always have been. I know plain water is essential, but I stay much more consistent when it’s flavored with function—like Thorne Amino Complex or LMNT.

Both help me maintain hydration and energy levels, and the Thorne Amino Acid Complex was even recommended by our functional medicine practitioner. My kids enjoy these too, which gives us better daily hydration options.

But again—Gatorade is our emergency hydration backup. When nothing else sounds good, and we need quick electrolytes for kids, it’s what I reach for.

What We Use (And When)

Here’s our family’s approach to hydration:

Daily or Preventative:

  • LMNT: Sugar-free electrolytes, great for hot days and high activity
  • Thorne Amino Complex: Lightly flavored and great for energy recovery
  • Coconut Water + Sea Salt: A natural hydration boost with added minerals

Emergency or Illness Support:

  • Gatorade for Kids: Easy to find, well-tolerated, and comforting
    • Especially helpful during fevers, vomiting, flu, or early constipation
    • Pro tip: Freeze half-servings for about an hour—it’s soothing and more palatable during nausea or food poisoning

Teaching My Kids to Tune In

We help Claire and Peter learn to recognize their own signals:
“I’m thirsty,” “I didn’t eat enough,” or “I feel drained.”

Hydration is such a quiet, foundational part of children’s health, and noticing how they feel helps them become more body-aware over time.

We frame electrolyte drinks like Gatorade as tools, not treats—something they understand has a time and place. That makes it both special and effective.

Hydration is a Quiet Parenting Win

Parenting is full of big values and small wins. Keeping a few bottles of Gatorade in our emergency bin or car kit might not seem like much, but it matters when the moment strikes.

This isn’t about brand loyalty or pushing one product. It’s about being prepared to support our kids’ hydration and recovery when they need it most.

We don’t have to pick between perfect and practical.
We can do both.
