“I Have 3 Minutes for You” Family Challenge

Hi friends!

We’re so glad you’re here for Week 27 of our 52‑Week Family Challenge, and this one has quickly become a new favorite around our home. We’re calling it:

“I Have 3 Minutes for You.”

This week is all about connection in short, meaningful bursts. Each person in the family gets a moment in the spotlight, while the rest of us join in, listen, play, and support with our full attention—for just three minutes.

It’s simple. It’s intentional. And it might surprise you with how much heart it holds.

Claire, Peter, Mom, Dad… and Grandma Too!

This isn’t just a kid thing—it’s a full-family experience. Claire, Peter, Mom (me!), Dad, and even Grandma when she’s here—all take turns.

At Here They Grow, we believe that family is where we practice showing up for one another, and this week’s challenge is a perfect way to do just that.

If you’ve followed along with past weeks—like Week 17: Celebrating Learning and Growth Together—you already know that we love giving every voice in our family space to be heard and celebrated. This activity takes that even further by putting each person at the center of the family’s attention, even if only for a few minutes.

Here’s How It Works

The flow is simple and flexible enough to work for a wide range of ages and family styles. Here’s how we do it:

  1. The group starts by saying: “We have 3 minutes for you!”
  2. The person whose turn it is shares what they’d like the group to do together.
  3. The activity must be reasonable and respectful—but also a true reflection of what that person wants to share.
  4. Everyone else responds with enthusiasm and encouragement—even if it’s not their favorite thing.
  5. Set a timer for 3 minutes, and join in fully.
  6. When time’s up, switch to the next person’s turn smoothly and kindly.
  7. Repeat until everyone’s had a chance.

It’s fast, fun, and rooted in intentionality. And that part? That’s where the magic lives.

Think 3 Minutes Sounds Too Short (or a Little Cringy)?

3 minutes for you

We get it. Maybe 3 minutes feels a little too short for your older kids—or maybe it sounds a little silly to say out loud. Try 5 minutes instead. Some days, we do too. And that’s great!

But even if 5 feels out of reach or too long for your family to commit to every day, here’s the truth:

👉 Three minutes is better than zero.

You don’t need an hour to make your child feel important. You just need a few focused moments of real attention. When we show up for one another—even briefly—it’s often enough to change the tone of the day.

The Purpose Behind It

This whole challenge is built around mutual respect, shared time, and small-scale leadership. When a child says, “I want to play this game with you,” or “I want you to watch me do a backbend,” and the whole family joins in?

That’s memorable. That builds confidence. That builds connection.

Each 3-minute session says:

  • You matter to us.
  • Your interests are worth our time.
  • We’re here with you, fully present.

It also teaches kids (and adults) how to lead with care, how to be thoughtful about others’ time, and how to receive attention without demanding it.

Great Ideas for Older Kids and Adults

This challenge isn’t just for preschoolers or little ones. In fact, it really shines when older kids and teens get involved. Because when older kids choose their activity, they often get creative and meaningful about it:

  • Invite the group to listen to a song they’ve been practicing
  • Ask for help with a short art prompt
  • Share something they wrote
  • Lead a quick stretch, prayer, or mindfulness exercise
  • Talk about something that’s on their heart over cocoa or tea
  • Invite the group to answer a digital journal or printable page together

There’s real power in watching your kids lead, and this challenge gives them a safe, supportive stage to practice that.

Reflection Game: “I Feel Blessed Because…”

After every round, we close our time with a few minutes of quiet reflection using our favorite printable prompt game:
“I Feel Blessed Because…”

You’ll find it in the Games section of our website (not on Etsy). It’s a gentle, family-friendly way to slow down, feel grateful, and soak up the joy that just unfolded—even in a few short minutes.

Final Thought: Small Minutes, Big Meaning

This week’s challenge is short, but it’s rich. You don’t need a full afternoon to build strong family connection. Sometimes, all you need is three minutes—and a willingness to show up.

So whether you’re diving in with enthusiasm or tiptoeing in gently, remember:

3 minutes is enough. And it’s more than most families get.

Here’s to Week 27—may your home be filled with moments of laughter, focus, and connection that lasts long after the timer stops.

With love,
Ashley (Mom at Here They Grow)
